Instagram

Img_8911

I was fortunate enough to meet Kevin, co-founder of Instagram two weeks ago. We didn´t talk about Instagram though and I have to admit I have never been a huge fan of the service. (it´s more than an app witch is a part of the brilliance of Instagram) Here is why I like it but don´t LOVE it:

  1. It´s boring / takes time to scroll thru the picture feed. (yes, I´m actually one of those that love to see what other people are doing too and not just update and that´s that so this is huge for me)
  2. When you use it to share a photo anywhere else like Facebook, Twitter etc. the name "Instagram" follows everywhere. I know it´s marketing for the service but for me as a user I would prefer not to spam friends with the same words in my posts in every update.
  3. Instagram automatically creates an own photo album on Facebook called "Instagram". I have enough albums on Facebook that I don´t want a own Instagram album. (Having one album for "wall uploads" and one for "mobile uploads" is far enough)
  4. In a users profile there is no quick way to click thru past photos. To see them in full size you have to open each and every one of them.
  5. You can´t see if a user is following you back.
  6. You can´t download photo to your phone after it´s uploaded. (it does it automatically but some times you don´t want your iphone album to have all the photos but then you suddenly need it again)
  7. It´s frustrating not to be able to share photos on Instagram. Meaning if I see a photo I love from a user I´m following, I can´t RT or share it with my followers again. And this might just be the reason. All though frustrating and who knows if it would be more interactive like Twitter if they did open up to it. Path has anyway concord the "private" sharing field anyway.
It do sometimes share more private photos on Instagram as it feels like a more closed community to share on than for example Facebook (if you don´t use list as I do but people don´t understand when you use list on Facebook and that they might be one of few people to see it and not all the connections).

Online today I see many people are sceptic towards that Facebook will ruin Instigram. I´m not. I think they will just make it better and continue the great job with the team of Instagram.
My tiny first wish after the acquisition to Facebook: that they make it possible to open a shared Instagram photo from the facebook feed without having to open it in a link and start a new webpage just to see the photo in full size.

Start-up Weekend London - EO Slides

Eoslides_

I´m not gone comment on Start-up Weekend as I pick my battles but one amazing thing came out of it: I meet two talented people behind EOslides. Marcin Cajzer and Maciej Ziehlke is renewing the field of presentations. Think of it as a marriage between livestream and slideshare! It´s all in html5 and no downloading of anything needed. I spent parts of the weekend giving some of my input on it and I´m really excited on the next steps for them.

What 7 weeks in London looks like by geo-data

I´v had an amazing 7 weeks in London. Thanks to all that made it that way!I started off my living in Notting Hill/Ladbroke Grove but then every tech event (like 90%!) is in Shoreditch so moved over there after calculating that I saved one and a half hour a day of going back and fourth. And then with my favorite girl by Tower Bridge.

I have used check-ins on Facebook (some public shared, some private;)  to actually get to know the city better. (all though it´s probably the city I know best in Europe from my teens it´s still so big that there is always a new area to explore). By the looks of the map I´m starting to cover the city pretty good taken in to consideration that I have not have one day off for sight-seen. I would love to write a couple of posts on where to go but right now it´s all mixed in my head as there is so many and I have never been so buzzy as now. I also do some updates on Foursquare and Instagram when I remember to. Anyway, you know London is good, so go go go:)

Next for me now is a couple of weeks in Silicon Valley.

Oh webbing, webbing, webbing

Why are you not cheaper? It´s as good as it gets; a beautiful small thing that gives out wi-fi! You can sit in the back of a taxi (or crammed up in the tube as I am here) with your computer + your phone and be online anywhere!

Some amazing people from Tel-Aviv tipped me about this product as I wanted something that didn´t pay attention to what country I´m in. So for me that travels a lot and like being home in Norway as well, I wanted something that I could take anywhere and not worry about high roaming costs and not have to change SIM cards all the time. What Webbing has is a european pay plan and a international one if you for example travel to the US as well as Europe.

What makes it next to useless? It´s just to god dam expensive. You might want to sit down for this.€7656 a year. In euros. (not that it would be much better had it been 7656 dollars). The math: 22 euros a day x 29 days x 12 months. This is the international version. There is a European package for 150 euros a month, 1800 euros a year. Then it´s something like 7 euros a day if you only use it for four days a month. First of all, it´s to complicated pricing packages but that might be the point and second, they should think about how genius this product is and that they might make even more had it just been more available for private people like me who is not lucky enough to have a company pay my phone or internet bills. They have great customer service as well so it´s like the perfect gadget from the perfect company. (They shipped it to me from Israel to UK in two days!)

Now, I´m not known for being cheap and I value practical gadgets that saves me time and energy higher than cost, but 1800 euros a year is a pretty decent cruise in the Caribbean. I still can´t figure out what I would rather have...

Want to be a technical co-founder?

Yes, I´m on the search for a kick ass programmer and not just that but a technical co-founder!

The deadline for taking the incubator´s code test is late Monday 6.february so think fast to get on the start-up roller-coaster.

”The greatest obstacle to starting a tech company in 2012 will be the shortage of entrepreneurial tech talent”  Andy Young

According to this article I´m not the only one who is on the look for great tech talent. It´s one of an entrepreneurs biggest challenges to find a good team! I want to partner up instead of "do my own thing" and I´m looking for someone who also think it´s the future of collaboration.

So what can I put on the table? Being in one of the top incubators in San Francisco for three months, being a part of a unique community of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and last but not least create a social media video tool that will change the way people connect in a collaboration with people from around the world. (as a web-developer the most important thing is skills and determination and not where you are based)

Qualifications: experience on solving technical challenges with video streaming. (skype, online tv, video chat etc) The code test for the incubator can only be done by one person and takes 2,5 hours.

If you are a programmer and would like to know more about the product and the the incubator program you can e-mail me with previous work at hanna(at)hannaaase.no or Twitter: @hannaaase.

New Years Eve 2012

Five days at Dr.Holms Hotel in Geilo is like balsam for the soul. Except when your with hyper energetic fabulous girls like these. Then you need a couple of days more at Geilo;) First time I´m experiencing after-party until the morning and then going straight to the breakfast bufee! Thanks girls for a fabulous week and NYE weekend! The two sisters have their own blog as well: http://thenilsens.blogg.no/ :)

Me and Anette also celebrated having spent two NYE together. (yes there is a reason for celebrating everything:) And the scenery could not be more different. From sun and beach in Playa Del Carmen in 2009 to snowy Geilo in 2012. But we proved to have fun wherever we are! Happy New Years sweetie and here´s for 2012!!
